What is huperzine A
Huperzine A derives from Huperzia serrata. Huperzia serrata (Thunb.) Trev, also known as the Millennium Pagoda. It is a perennial fern from the Huperiaceae family, Huperzia Bernh. and Sect serrate ea (Rothm.) Holub.
It is a natural, novel effective monomer of lycopodium alkaloids identified from the Huperzia genus of the Huperziaceae family in China. It has the molecular name (5R, 9R, 11E) 5-amino-11-ethylide-5,6,9,10-tetrahydro-7-methyl-5,9-methylcyclooctano (6) pyridine-2 (1H) one.Yellowish crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. Currently, huperzine A has been shown to have some effect on Alzheimer’s disease.
Botanical Source and function:
Huperzia A, produced from the herb Lycopodium serratum Thunb, can help eliminate heat, detoxify, build muscle, halt bleeding, disperse blood stasis, and reduce edema. It is used to treat injuries, blood stasis, swelling and pain, internal bleeding, carbuncles, venomous snake bites, burns, and scars. Modern clinical research have indicated that extracts from this plant have significant or beneficial effects on the treatment of schizophrenia, myasthenia gravis, and senile memory loss. The active component is huperzine A.Huperzine A is a reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor with good selectivity, minimal toxicity, and long effectiveness time.
